Alright. Finally a step in the right direction. John Cary, the founder of Public Interest Design (a blog documenting the growing movement at the intersection of design and service) has curated a glossary of social impact design terminology. While the practice of “social design” has been in existence for quite some time, we, as both educators and practitioners, have long-lacked a common vocabulary to describe our approaches.

I’m not talking about the designers who created this surprisingly controversial identity. I’m talking about everyone else. I’m talking about the haters. Designers who want the profession—and themselves—to be taken seriously need to be asking questions that get to the core of the motivations and goals that frame a project before passing judgment on the outcome. Otherwise our “criticism” is simply subjective. And if and when we do criticize the work of fellow professionals, we should strive to do so in an informed and civil manner.”

-
AIGA | The UC logo controversy: How 54,000 people, the mainstream press and virtually every designer got it wrong

This is a great exploration of public discourse (if you can call it that?) surrounding a new logo/identity system for the University of California.
————- For Immediate Release —————————-

Frontier Fellowship: Now Accepting Applications for 2013-15

The Frontier Fellowship is offered through the Epicenter, a community resource center instigating positive change through design based projects and programs. The Epicenter is located in a historic building in Green River, Utah (pop. 953) and houses an office space, a small basement workshop, outdoor workspace, and five full-time employees. Epicenter is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

The Frontier Fellowship gives creative professionals the opportunity to live and work in the town of Green River for four to six weeks. In the context of the frontier, Fellows respond to the rural location with their independent work. However, collaborative work is highly encouraged. While in residence, Fellows ideally spend 50% of their time working on personal projects and 50% of their time contributing to a project initiated by the Epicenter. While in residence, Fellows are given printing privileges, wifi access, use of a bicycle, Family Meal Plan membership, use of tools, and workspace. The Fellowship is currently unpaid. However, there are scholarships available for workshop supplies, travel, and/or living stipend. Fellows’ work is promoted for four-weeks (at minimum) during their Fellowship and added to an online exhibit upon completion. The experience extends long past one’s stay through inclusion in the ever-expanding group of past participants that continue to exchange ideas, information, and opportunities.

The Epicenter facilitates Fellowship opportunities on a continual basis throughout the year, and is currently seeking Fellows in the fields of visual art, community-based art, collaborative art, public art, architecture, design, film, culinary arts, new media, and writing. Applications will be accepted regardless of applicant’s background, focus, or specialty.

January 4, 2013 - All applications due (in hand)

January 4 - February 1, 2013 - Applications reviewed & applicants interviewed

This is so cool! Using the visual language of advertising to have positive social impact. BOOM!

“This campaign, which launched in October and has quickly become both the best-looking and most ubiquitous advertising on L.A.’s streets, is produced by art organization ForYourArt to benefit the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education (or LA Fund for short), a nonprofit co-founded by LAUSD superintendent John Deasy last year. And the artist is none other than the legendary Barbara Kruger, whose signature black, white and red graphics — like a public service announcement meets reassuring Mad Men-era advertising — reads spectacularly well in L.A.’s urban environment.

The LA Fund is hoping to raise $1.5 million by the spring to fund a new initiative called Arts Matter and Kruger’s work — actually an original, site-specific piece named Untitled, (Human History) — is meant to work on two levels, says LA Fund executive director Dan Chang. The campaign is meant to both communicate the critical importance of arts education funding to Angelenos and deliver that art to the city in a kind of mobile gallery. “It’s about the awareness of getting public art into the streets of L.A. and making it accessible to people who wouldn’t otherwise see it.”“
